MALE, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Maldivian government said on Sunday that the island country is not dependent on any nation and it aimed to act in what most benefits its citizens.

Local media reports quoting Foreign Secretary Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, said that the Maldives has transformed from an isolated nation in the world to an influential and respected nation.

The lifting of sanctions and acceptance by various international non-governmental organisations is strong evidence to the efforts of the administration to repair broken ties with the international community, Ghafoor said

He also explained that the support the Maldives received during the Indian Ocean Conference and Maldives Partnership Forum was the further evidence to the fact that the global community had accepted the country after years of isolation.

Ghafoor further said the island country will not depend on just one nation in overseeing development projects and the government will make efforts to sustain and strengthen the relationship it has with its current international partners, as well as build ties with new partners from the international community.

Furthermore, the foreign secretary stressed that China is an important partner in the development of the Maldives.
