UNDP trains Botswana technical experts on Multidimensional Poverty Index

GABORONE, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, University of Oxford started here on Monday a 5-day training aimed at facilitating capacity building on Multidimensional Poverty Index( MPI) in Botswana.

The workshop has attracted statisticians and technical experts of the Poverty Eradication Coordination Unit, Statistics Botswana and other relevant ministries.

It is expected to provide a conceptual and technical introduction to multidimensional approach to poverty including its measurement with a strong emphasis on the Alkire-Foster Method.

Among other topics, discussions will revolve around the implementation and use of multidimensional measures for policy purposes.

The objective is to raise awareness on the methodology and the value added of multidimensional poverty measures as complements to existing consumption to existing consumption-based poverty metrics.

At the end of the 5-day training, participants are expected to understand why and how multidimensional poverty measures add value to unidimensional measures and dashboards and how they can be used for informing policy making.

They will also be expected to understand how to compute and analyze a Multidimensional Poverty Index and know about further opportunities to engage within the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network for policy makers.
