SYDNEY, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Dramatic footage posted to social media on Tuesday shows two BASE jumpers parachuting from one of Western Australia’s (WA) tallest buildings in a daring daylight stunt.
While people on the ground were shocked and amazed by the death-defying feat, police in the city of Perth were not amused by the dare-devils.
"This type of behavior is reckless and irresponsible and the WA Police force does not condone this type of behavior," a police spokesman told local media.
Illegal in numerous countries around the world including Australia, the term BASE stands for Building, Antenna, Span and Earth.
As one of the most dangerous extreme sports on the globe, it’s believed there’s been at least 260 deaths since the year 2000, according to the BASE Fatality List.
Although the jumpers fled the scene after landing safely on a patch of grass below, authorities are now investigating the incident to find out the identities of those involved and how they managed to gain access to the roof of the 40-storey Exchange Tower.
"I was just doing my work and out of the corner of my eye I saw something strange," Alex Bennett, who works on the ninth floor of a nearby building, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
"I walked over to the window and saw one dude landing right here with a parachute and I was like, what the hell?”
"I kept looking and another two guys landed, and they just grabbed their chutes and kind of legged it around the corner."
Under Australian law, abseiling, jumping or parachuting from a building or other structure carries a maximum penalty of three months imprisonment.
