S.Korea's employment growth hits 29-month high in August

SEOUL, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's employment growth hit the highest in 29 months last month, with jobless rate falling sharply, a government report showed Wednesday.

The number of those employed totaled 27,358,000 in August, up 452,000 from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea. It marked the fastest increase in 29 months since March 2017.

The employment rate for those aged 15 or higher gained 0.5 percentage points over the year to 61.4 percent last month. The OECD-method hiring rate for those aged 15-64 rose 0.5 percentage points to 67.0 percent.

The number of those unemployed declined 275,000 from a year earlier to 858,000 in August, recording the lowest August figure in six years.

Jobless rate retreated 1.0 percentage point to 3.0 percent in the cited period.
