COLOMBO, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will face heavy rains and strong winds in the coming days due to the annual south-west monsoons establishing over the island country, the Meteorology Department said in its latest weather update Thursday.

Heavy rains of about 100 mm to 150 mm can be expected at some places particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts in the south.

Fairly strong gusty winds up to 40 km per hour are also likely over the country, particularly in the central hilly areas and over southern coastal areas.

"There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity," the Meteorology Department said.

Over 150,000 people were affected by the south-west monsoons last year and over 20 deaths reported.
