CAIRO, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi issued a decree on Thursday naming a new public prosecutor, state-run Ahram newspaper reported.

Hamada al-Sawi, who served in high-level posts since 1986, has succeeded Nabil Sadek whose term ends on Sept. 16, the report said.

Al-Sawi was a member of the technical office of the Cairo Appeal Court. In October 2015, he was appointed as senior Attorney General of the Cairo Appeal Prosecution.

He took over the investigation in December 2016 into the bombing of the St. Peter church, where he was the Advocate General of the Cairo Court of Appeal. Almost 30 people were killed in the terrorist attack.

The public prosecution is an integral part of the judiciary. It shall carry out investigation of criminal cases.

He shall be appointed by a presidential decree for four years or for the remaining years until he reached the age of retirement.
