Tunisian interim president meets with Iraqi FM on ties

TUNIS, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian Interim President Mohamed Ennaceur met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim on bilateral relations, according to a statement released Thursday by the Tunisian presidency.

The Iraqi foreign minister is on an official visit to Tunisia for the 16th session of the Tunisian-Iraqi Joint Commission.

According to the statement, Ennaceur focused on the importance of the historic relations between Tunisia and Iraq, and expressed his satisfaction toward the progress made by Iraq in terms of security, stability and development.

Ennaceur confirmed Tunisia's support for all efforts aimed at strengthening security, stability and achieving economic and social development in Iraq.

The Iraqi foreign minister said that his country is seeking to strengthen relations with Tunisia and open new opportunities of cooperation, especially in economic and security fields.

On the sidelines of the 16th session of the Tunisian-Iraqi Joint Commission, several agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed on strengthening cooperation in the areas of political consultations, culture and air services.
