BERLIN, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Volkswagen delivered 848,600 vehicles in August, marking a decrease of 3.1 percent compared to the same month last year, the German vehicle manufacturer announced on Friday.

"The Volkswagen Group continued to perform well in a challenging market environment in August, with a slight rise in its global market share", Christian Dahlheim, head of Volkswagen Group Sales, commented.

In Europe, 316,500 vehicles were delivered to customers in August. The decline of 3.4 percent compared to the same month last year had been expected, Volkswagen stated.

Back in August 2018, deliveries by Volkswagen had been at a particularly high level due to the transition to the Worldwide Harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).

Deliveries in Volkswagen's domestic market declined even more pronounced than in Europe with 3.6 percent.

The Asia-Pacific region recorded a decline of 4.8 percent to 363,200 vehicles delivered. In China, Volkswagen´s largest single market, 341,100 vehicles were delivered.

The only growing markets for Volkswagen were North and South America, where the German automotive group increased its deliveries by 3.3 percent and 3.9 percent respectively year on year.
