RABAT, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Moroccan police busted on Saturday a drug trafficking gang in the southern city of Agadir and seized 1.63 tons of cannabis.

Two suspects aged 41 and 49 with criminal records were arrested, said the police department in a statement.

A car was seized as well as a sum of money which likely to come from cannabis and psychotropic drug trafficking, the statement added.

The suspects were remanded in custody while investigations are underway to determine all the ramifications of this criminal network, the statement said.

Despite the efforts of cracking down on cannabis farming during the last decades, Morocco remains the world's largest producer of cannabis resin.

According to the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime's World Drug Report 2016, Morocco ranked first among 129 countries in terms of cannabis production over the period 2009-2014, followed by Afghanistan, Lebanon, India and Pakistan.
