BAKU, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Azerbaijan's armed forces embarked on massive operational and tactical exercises on Monday to strengthen counter-offensive abilities, according to the country's defense ministry.

The five-day military drills involve up to 10,000 military personnel, more than 100 tanks and other armored vehicles, 120 sets of missile and artillery systems including multiple-launch rocket systems, and over 20 jets and drones.

The troops will practice a counter-offensive in mountainous terrain, launching preventive strikes to thwart the planned assaults of hostile forces and to seize their territories, the ministry said in a statement.

The drills will be set in faulty telecommunication condition, and the troops will also exercise coordination between assault squads, batteries and air forces, according to the ministry.

In March, the Azerbaijani armed forces held large-scale military drills to practice offensive tactics, followed by a defensive one in May.
