ISLAMABAD, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit parts of Pakistan on Tuesday, the country's National Seismic Monitoring Center said.

According to the center, the quake's depth was 10 km and its epicenter was located in Jehlum district of east Punjab province.

The strong tremors were felt in different areas of the country, including Punjab, northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, capital Islamabad and some parts of northeast Kashmir area, local media reported.

The tremors created panic among people who rushed to open places. However, no loss of life or property has been reported yet.

Pakistan has a history of serious earthquakes, as it is located at one of the most earthquake-prone areas with high vulnerability to earthquakes.

Seismology experts say that most of the earthquakes originate in the region because of the intersection of three large mountain ranges, the Hindu Kush, the Himalayas and the Karakoram.
