WARSAW, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Neckermann Poland, a subsidiary of the insolvent British travel giant Thomas Cook, has announced its intent to file for bankruptcy, with 3,600 Polish tourists traveling via the company being currently stranded abroad.

Maciej Nykiel, president of Neckermann Poland, said on Wednesday in a press statement that over the next days the company would file a bankruptcy request with a Warsaw court.

Nykiel also said that the company had asked the regional authorities in Mazowsze, the wider administrative area where Warsaw is located, to activate the company's insurance, which Neckermann hopes will be used to bring back the stranded tourists.

"Because of the current situation, we are closing down all operational activities connected with the sale of touristic products in Poland," Neckermann Poland said in the statement.

On Monday, Thomas Cook announced it had filed for bankruptcy.

Regional authorities in Mazowsze have already created a crisis team to deal with the emergency of the stranded tourists and are asking families of the stranded to help with their travel information.

Wieslaw Raboszuk, the vice marshal of Mazowsze, said that under the law, the regional authorities were now responsible for the safe return of the tourists.

The roughly 3,600 Polish tourists are now stranded mostly in Europe and in the Mediterranean.
