Chinese firms ink deals with Kenyan varsity to promote literary exchange

NAIROBI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese literature promotion campaign "China Shelf" firstly landed in Africa on Wednesday.

The Chinese delegation to the 22nd Nairobi International Book Fair hosted the "China Shelf" Kenya Cooperation Signing Ceremony on Wednesday, with hundreds of books reflecting the cultural achievements of China displaying at the exhibition.

Enjoy Culture and Media Co., Ltd and University of Nairobi as well as Zhongtu Changjiang Culture Media Co., Ltd and Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) respectively signed agreements on "China Shelf" and "Jingchu Shelf".

Isaac Mbeche, acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, expressed appreciation and support for Changjiang Media's move into Africa and Kenya, and congratulated the "China Shelf" on its first landing in Africa.

"I am looking forward to the long-term cooperation between the University of Nairobi and Confucius Institute and Changjiang Media. I expect that more Chinese publishers and cultural products themed in China will appear in Africa to help create a closer relationship and deeper cultural exchanges," said Isaac Mbeche.

The company also donated children books to the Kenya National Library Service to set up the Chinese Book Area in the library.

Ke Yang, director of foreign affairs of the printing firm, said an open China needs to integrate into the world, and the world needs to know China, and the Chinese children literature with distinctive features needs to go global under a scenario where the literature needs to show realistic and cultural values.

Wangari Ngovi, deputy director of Kenya National Library Services, said that she is very pleased to the further cooperation between her organization and the Chinese publishing industry, adding that the establishment of "China Shelf" has a great significance to Kenyan readers.

"Libraries are a meeting and melting point of cultures. The many information resources found in libraries allow the user to interact with diverse cultures of the world from the content. The partnership between Hubei publishing Media and KNLS brings this reality closer," said Ngovi.
