VIENNA, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Austria's political parties have increasingly taken to social media platform Facebook to advertise their campaigns ahead of Sunday's federal election, the newspaper Krone reported on Thursday.

Since March they have spent about 2.5 million euros (2.7 million U.S. dollars) on Facebook ads alone, with all of the lead candidates having a presence on the popular platform, according to Krone.

Their online campaigning efforts are to continue right up to election day, the report said.

The center-left Social Democrats headed by Pamela Rendi-Wagner have led the spending, with 500,000 euros spent on Facebook advertising, followed by the right-wing Freedom Party led by Norbert Hofer with 250,000 euros spent.

The Greens spent almost 200,000 euros, while further back was Sebastian Kurz's conservative People's Party at 180,000 euros.

These totals do not include all advertising on other candidates of the party, nor do they include advertising paid for during the European Parliament elections in May.
