WINDHOEK, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Namibia has drastically reduced the number of people living under the poverty datum line, a senior central bank official said Thursday.

Bank of Namibia Deputy Governor Ebson Uanguta said poverty head count in Namibia has reduced from 63.3 percent in 1993 to 14 percent to date, a move he described as showing positive signs of development.

Uanguta added that, although Namibia still faces realistic challenges of inequality and uneven distribution of wealth between the rich and poor, significant progress has been made to eradicate poverty in the Namibia society.

"The major question remains how do we continue to make inclusive growth for all Namibians an also fight the challenge of poverty and achieve an equal society," he said.

Uanguta also acknowledged challenges faced by the Namibian economy to attain strong growth at the back of revised figures that continue to indicate a contraction for the Namibian economy.
