ALGIERS, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Algeria's former Prime Minister Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday applied to run for presidency in the election slated for Dec. 12, the independent Ennahar TV reported.

Tebboune arrived at the National Independent Authority for Elections to fill in the candidacy forms, the report said.

Tebboune was sacked by former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in August 2017, less than three months after appointment, due to his fiery statements against the businessmen loyal to Bouteflika, who was ousted in April following massive protests.

Several prominent businessmen were placed under custody amid a crackdown on corruption launched by the Algerian justice following Bouteflika's ouster.

Also, some senior officials, including two former prime ministers, Abdelmalek Sellal and Ahmed Ouyahia, were also placed under custody.

Algeria has been witnessing mass protests since Feb. 22 as the demonstrators denounced corruption and called for enhancing the rule of law.
