COPENHAGEN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Danish wind turbine maker Vestas will lay off 590 employees in Denmark and Germany, citing greater customer demand for other types of wind turbine blades, it said in a press release on Friday.

Ninety of the layoffs will occur at the company's factory in Lem of Denmark, and a further 500 layoffs will take place at the Vestas' factory in Lauchhammer, south of Berlin, in Germany.

Vestas currently has a total of 24,500 employees worldwide.

The company had to adjust its costs to the customer demand for wind turbines, said Vestas chief operating officer Jean-Marc Lechene in the press release.

"The highly competitive industry and rapid transition in the field of energy mean that we have to introduce new products and solutions where and when the market demands them," said Lechene, making a reference to renewable energy.

Vestas emphasizes in the announcement that the Lem factory still remains the center for the development of new types of wind turbine blades.
