TRIPOLI, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- The eastern-based army of Libya on Monday said it launched several airstrikes on the rival UN-backed government's forces in different cities.

According to a statement issued by the eastern-based army's information office, the airstrikes targeted sites of the UN-backed government's forces in the cities of Misurata, Sirte, Gharyan, as well as south of the capital Tripoli.

The statement said that the airstrikes were carried out at dawn today and targeted operation chambers and weapons stores belonging to the UN-backed government's forces, revealing no details about casualties.

"Any suspicious gathering or movement will be a legitimate target for air force fighter jets," the statement warned.

Since early April, deadly armed conflict has been going on between the UN-backed government and the rival eastern-based army, which is trying to takeover Tripoli and topple the UN-backed government.

The fighting killed and injured thousands of people and displaced almost 120,000 civilians.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political division since the fall of the late leader Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
