TRIPOLI, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. embassy in Libya on Monday deplored an airstrike by the eastern-based army of Libya on an equestrian club in the capital Tripoli, which took place on Sunday and injured several children.
"The U.S. embassy deplores the recent escalation in violence and attacks on civilian infrastructure, including the October 6 airstrike, which the UN has attributed to the LNA (Libyan National Army) on the Equestrian Club in Janzour (western Tripoli) that reportedly injured innocent children in violation of international humanitarian law," the embassy tweeted.
"We remain committed to working with all parties to end the conflict and provide the opportunity for the return of normal life to all Libyans," the embassy said.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Sunday said it was appalled by the eastern-based army's airstrike, stressing that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructures constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian and human rights law and may constitute a war crime.
The eastern-based army on Sunday said that its fighter jets had attacked a site of the UN-backed government's forces in western Tripoli.
According to a local official, the attack injured a number of civilians, mostly children.
The eastern-based army and the UN-backed government have been fiercely fighting since early April for control over Tripoli.
The fighting has claimed thousands of lives and injured many others, and also displaced nearly 120,000 people.
The eastern-based army is allied with the eastern-based government, with the North African country is politically divided between governments in the east and west.
