ABUJA, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Nine people have been kidnapped by gunmen in military uniforms at a suburb of Nigeria's capital, Abuja, the police and local sources said on Tuesday.

Local police, while confirming the incident at the Pegi community of Kuje in the Nigerian capital city late Monday, said concerted efforts were being made to rescue the victims.

Abuja police spokesman Anjuguri Manzah said an investigation was underway to identify the gunmen.

"Meanwhile, we call on the public to be security conscious and provide information to the police and other relevant security agencies on suspicious movements and activities within their communities," Manzah said.

A 12-year-old boy was identified as one of the victims of the incident, local media reported.

According to other local sources, the gunmen set up an illegal roadblock and ordered the victims out of a vehicle. They then led them into another waiting vehicle and drove to an unknown location.
