RABAT, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will organize the Open Water Symposium dedicated to African and Arab countries from Oct. 28 to 31 in Moroccan capital Rabat.

Specialists will provide training sessions to participants from Africa and the Middle East, including decisionmakers, government representatives and researchers, UNESCO said on Tuesday in a statement.

The event aims to foster the access and use of free and/or open-source software, as sustainable tools for water resources management, it added.

The symposium is in line with the work of the Global Open Water Network, which aims at promoting joint research, development and education on open source software and open data for integrated water resources management, the statement added.

Issues related to water governance and management are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it said, adding that sustainable water management is critical.
