NEW DELHI, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday concluded a 40-day long hearing in the country's oldest legal case related to a land dispute between two religions in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

While the Hindus contend that Lord Ram was born in Ayodhya, in Uttar Pradesh, and that a temple dedicated to the Hindu God should be built there, on the other hand, the Muslims argue that a Mosque existed at the same spot for past few centuries but was demolished by the Hindus in December 1992.

The litigation is popularly known as the 'Ram Janambhoomi Babri Masjid' land dispute case.

It was also one of the marathon hearings in the apex court. At the conclusion of the hearing, the five-judge bench, including Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, of the apex court reserved its verdict to be pronounced at a later date.

It also directed both the disputing parties to present their written submissions within three days.
