KAMPALA, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Eight people have been confirmed dead in the eastern Uganda district of Jinja after two lorries got involved in an accident on Monday night.

"Two lorries loaded with sugarcane were involved in a fatal accident. So far eight have been confirmed dead," said Henry Mugarura, the Kiira North Division Police Commander.

He told Xinhua on phone that the cause of the accident was overspeeding that resulted in failure to brake.

Several others who were injured have been rushed to the regional hospital in Jinja district, he said.

He cautioned drivers to stick to the traffic rules and avoid speeding, especially during this rainy season.

Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents with over 2,000 deaths each year, making it one of the countries with the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, according to police figures.
