TRIPOLI, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The air force of Libya's eastern-based army on Tuesday attacked Mitiga International Airport in the capital Tripoli, destroying weapons and ammunition belonging to the UN-backed government forces.

"The air force of our Libyan Armed Forces carried out an airstrike on weapon stores and facilities in the military part of Mitiga airport, which were used by the militias and armed groups (the UN-backed government forces)," the eastern-based army's spokesman Ahmad al-Mismari said in a statement.

"As a result of this airstrike, several massive explosions occurred as rockets and ammunition were destroyed, which were used by the militias and the armed groups," the statement said.

The spokesman said that the airstrike was carried out "very accurately," hitting no civilian facilities.

Flights at Mitiga International Airport have been suspended indefinitely since early September due to repeated airstrikes, forcing authorities to transfer flights to Misurata International Airport, some 200 km east of Tripoli.

The eastern-based army has been leading a military campaign for more than six months to take over Tripoli from the UN-backed government.

Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
