LUSAKA, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Wildlife authorities in Zambia have managed to re-secure two rhinos that had strayed out of a park in the southern part of the country, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.
The two female rhinos, which are part of 10 white rhinos re-stocked in the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park following the decimation of the whole rhino population by poachers, were captured after several attempts to herd them back.
Sakabilo Kalembwe, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Tourism and Arts said despite attempts to bring them back to the park, the rhinos continued to drift further from the park into apparent hot poaching spots.
"It was at this moment when the scale of threats of poaching and safety of the animals became more apparent that the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and other well-wishers put resources together to have the elusive rhinos safely returned to the park," he said.
He however said during their stray, the rhinos were constantly monitored and guarded by the wildlife police officers.
The rhinos, he said, might have strayed from the national park due to, among other reasons diminished natural food resources amid drought.
