TRIPOLI, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The UN-backed government of Libya condemned Tuesday's the eastern-based army for indiscriminate shelling that killed two children and injured three other civilians in Tripoli.
"The Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord condemns in the strongest terms the bombing carried out by (Khalifa) Haftar's militias (of the eastern-based army) on residential buildings of Salahuddin neighborhood that killed and injured innocent children and frightened civilians," the UN-backed government said in a statement.
The shelling is "a clear violation of the international humanitarian law," it added, while urging the UN mission in Libya to protect civilians.
Ted Chaiban, the UN Children's Fund's regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, demanded the rival parties in Libya "refrain from attacks on civilian infrastructure including people's homes, schools, hospitals and medical facilities."
"These recent attacks are a reminder that children in Libya continue to pay first and most as violence continues in a number of areas in the western parts of the country," Chaiban said in a statement.
A few days ago, three children were killed and three others injured in an airstrike that hit a house in Tripoli.
The UN-backed government has been engaged in a deadly armed conflict against the rival eastern-based army since early April for control over Tripoli.
Despite the international calls for immediate cease-fire, both parties continue fighting in and around Tripoli.
