GABORONE, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Botswana kicked off its 12th general election on Wednesday at 7 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) with all the 2,296 polling stations opened on time across the 57 constituencies.

Osupile Maroba, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) public relations officer, told Xinhua on Wednesday that all has started well and the expectation is there will be no glitches until election ends.

Botswana's President Mokgweetsi Masisi is expected to cast his vote at around 10 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) in his home village of Moshupa, some 85 km west of Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana.

The four nominated candidates are the incumbent President Masisi of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party alongside Duma Boko of the Umbrella for Democratic Change, Ndaba Gaolathe of the Alliance for Progressives, and Biggie Butale of the newly formed Botswana Patriotic Front.

The candidate whose party wons the majority of the 57 constituencies to form a National Assembly will take over the presidency.
