ULAN BATOR, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Five people, including an infant, have been killed in motorcycle accidents in Mongolia since the beginning of this week, the country's traffic police department said Friday.

"Unfortunately, five people, including a five-month-old-boy, died in five separate motorcycle accidents in our country this week," it said.

All of the five accidents occurred in rural areas, according to the police department.

"In recent years, motorcycle-related accidents have been increasing among Mongolian herders. This is partly due to the fact that Mongolian herders prefer to ride motorcycles to look for livestock animals instead of riding horses," the department said.

Around 90 people have been killed in motorcycle accidents in the country so far this year, it added.

There were 55,926 registered motorcycles across the country as of the end of 2018, up 16 percent year on year.
