COPENHAGEN, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded warmly on Monday to the news that all the European Union (EU) states had accepted the British government's request to postpone Brexit by three months, from Oct. 31 this year to Jan. 31, 2020.

"The Danish position has always been that we support an extension if that is what is needed. I am glad that the British have more time to get a deal in place. It is in Denmark's interest that we do what we can to avoid a harsh Brexit," the Prime Minister tweeted on Monday.

Frederiksen's relief at the extension came in contrast with her wariness at an early October joint press conference in Copenhagen with her Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar.

"The next couple of weeks are uncertain and of course we are all preparing for a no-deal. But I hope we will still be able to find a solution," said Frederiksen at that time, fearing a no-deal Brexit on Oct. 31.

Earlier on Monday, Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, wrote on his Twitter account: "The EU27 has agreed that it will accept the UK's request for a #Brexit flextension until 31 January 2020. The decision is expected to be formalised through a written procedure."
