S.Korea's retail sale grows on strong online demand

SEOUL, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Retail sale in South Korea grew last month on strong shopping demand in the cyberspace, a government report showed Wednesday.

Revenue by major domestic retailers rose 2.7 percent in September from a year earlier, after expanding 7.0 percent in the previous month, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Online sale jumped 17.8 percent in the month on demand for daily supplies and small home appliances. The sale of food and clothing in the cyberspace reduced 2.8 percent and 0.8 percent each last month.

The offline retail sale declined 5.0 percent in September on weak demand for food and clothing.

Among offline retailers, the revenue of convenient stores grew 2.8 percent, while those for department stores and discount outlets diminished 5.6 percent and 9.6 percent each in the period.

The results were based on the revenue combination of 13 online retailers and 13 offline retailers, including discount outlets, department stores and convenient stores.
