SINGAPORE, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States should expand ties in areas including medical care and infrastructure in order to lesson future trade tensions, said several prominent politicians, scholars and business leaders at an international symposium on China-U.S. relations that opened here Wednesday.

The two-day symposium, with its theme of "U.S. and China: Forging a Common Cause for the Development of Asia and the World", is co-hosted by the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE), the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) of National University of Singapore and U.S. research group Brookings Institution.

China and the United States should properly settle their trade frictions on the basis of equality and mutual respect, Zeng Peiyan, chairman of the CCIEE, said in his keynote speech.

"China and the United States should actively expand new areas of cooperation such as agriculture, energy and resources, medical care and health and infrastructure, restore in due course the various inter-governmental dialogues that were established previously and strengthen the all-round exchanges between enterprises, think tanks and universities and at the sub-national level," Zeng added.

The symposium attracted nearly 80 delegates from over 10 countries and regions to discuss issues, including trade and investment, multilateralism and technology innovation and the global supply chain.

Singapore's Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who is also the chair of the Governing Board of the LKYSPP, and Vice President and Director of the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution Bruce Jones also delivered welcome addresses at the event.
