HARBIN, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- A border port in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province has commenced a seasonal hovercraft operation to transport passengers between China and Russia.

A total of nine hovercraft, two from China and seven from Russia, were put into operation on Sunday on the Heilongjiang River to ferry passengers between Heihe Port and the Russian city of Blagoveshchensk.

A one-way trip takes around two minutes, with a capacity of 25 passengers per trip on the largest hovercraft.

Hovercraft, also known as air-cushion vehicles, are amphibious crafts capable of traveling over land, water, mud, ice and other surfaces.

The operation is expected to last for two months until the river is fully frozen.

An important port in Heilongjiang, Heihe lies 100 meters away from Blagoveshchensk.
