MOSCOW, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- China devotes itself to countering protectionism and sets a good example in opening its market to the world, a senior Russian scholar said Tuesday, when the second China International Import Expo (CIIE) opened in Shanghai.

"China is doing everything possible to counter the growing trend of protectionism and the erection of barriers to world trade," Natalia Pecheritsa, director of the Center for Asia-Pacific Region of Russian New University, said in an interview with Xinhua.

She noted that China calls on countries across the world to strive to build a global economy based on the principle of openness and cooperation, which was underlined by Chinese President Xi Jinping in his keynote speech at the CIIE opening.

China has continued to open up its market to the outside world and increase imports since a series of new measures announced a year ago, Pecheritsa said, adding that these measures, including shortening the 'negative' list for foreign investment and adopting a new law on foreign investment, have been implemented.

She also noted that China is actively contributing to the development of global trade through the Belt and Road initiative, and supporting the negotiations on the establishment of a Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

In addition, she added that the Chinese leader in his statement also called for increased cooperation of all countries in the innovation sector.

"In recent years, China has made great efforts to develop its scientific, technical and innovative potential," she said, adding that China's achievements in high technology and innovation has seen growing recognition from the international community.
