MOSCOW, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Kremlin is considering pardoning a Norwegian who has been convicted of espionage, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday.
In April, the Moscow City Court sentenced Frode Berg, a retired Norwegian border guard, to 14 years in a high security prison for spying.
The Norwegian was arrested in December 2017 in Moscow for possession of confidential documents and was accused of sharing sensitive information about the Russian Navy with Norwegian authorities.
Berg decided not to appeal the verdict and announced through a lawyer his intention to ask for a presidential pardon.
On Oct. 24, Russian media reported that the official Moscow commission that deals with prison pardons said it had recommended Berg to be pardoned and sent the recommendation to the Kremlin.
Russian President Vladimir Putin could sign a decree granting the pardon or decline the request.
