BUDAPEST, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The regional program support office of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism will be based in Budapest, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto announced here on Thursday.

"Several specialized United Nations (UN) organizations already have a regional headquarters in Hungary. The new office will have regional coordination on counter-terrorism," Szijjarto said at a two-day international conference entitled "Prevention of radicalization to terrorism through holistic policy responses and risk mitigation".

"Hungary is an active and successful participant in the international community's fight against terrorism," he added, noting that this fact had been recognized by the UN.

At the conference, Szijjarto and Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary for the UN office of Counter-Terrorism signed the deal on establishing the UN regional program support office in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

According to the minister, it has been proven that mass flows of illegal immigration provide an opportunity for terrorist organizations to send their fighters all over the world. "Therefore, stopping such migration processes is an important tool in the fight against terrorism," he concluded.
