BERLIN, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's anti-China rhetoric in Berlin is just another fusty attempt to erect a wall of ideology as the world is marking the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In the midst of strained U.S.-German relations, Pompeo visited Germany earlier this week to restore the trans-Atlantic ties by reiterating the identity of the West and their common values.

In a speech on Friday, Pompeo defamed China's political system and policies in a sinister attempt to drive a wedge between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese people.

The latest anti-China rhetoric, inconsistent with his official post, deepened the impression that the top U.S. diplomat is seeking political capital by repeatedly bashing China.

Pompeo turned a blind eye to China's achievements in development under the leadership of the CPC. In the past 40 years, the country has achieved a robust economic take-off, lifted over 800 million people out of poverty, and substantially improved its people's living standards.

The success of China's development has proven that China's path is suitable for the country's conditions. The CPC always represents and defends the interests of the Chinese people, so that it has won their trust and support.

While people gathered to reflect on the bitterness of the Cold War, Pompeo, who stationed in West Germany as a U.S. Army officer in the 1980s, seems to be still living in the old days of division and confrontation.

Pompeo's provocative attempt to hype up the so-called "China threat" exposes strong ideological prejudice and Cold-War mentality, and is doomed to fail.

As globalization, regional integration and multi-polarization have gained great momentum after the Cold War, peace, development and cooperation, not ideological competition, have risen to become the Zeitgeist of the world today.

Pompeo should understand that China has already integrated itself deeply with the wider world.

Take traveling as an example. In 2018, the number of exits and entries across the border made by the Chinese people reached some 560 million, and foreigners' trips to and out of China surpassed 90 million times for the first time.

A globalized world needs no more walls but roads and bridges. While Pompeo and some like-minded U.S. politicians are building walls of ideology and barriers against free trade, China is promoting global cooperation in a bid to address common challenges facing mankind.

Pompeo should be fully aware that his unfounded criticism of China could hardly produce any echo, except for triggering more doubts about his own credibility.
