MADRID, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Acting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was among the early voters as Spain went to the polls on Sunday, the second time in 2019 and the fourth time in four years.
Sanchez cast his vote shortly before 10:00 am local time (9:00 GMT) in the town of Pozuelo de Alarcon on the outskirts of north of the Spanish capital Madrid.
After voting, the leader of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) made a call for people to use their vote, saying "democracy" was "one of the most important inheritances our parents have left us and we have to use our right to vote."
"Democracy unites us as a country and makes us stronger and a day like this, it makes the will of all the Spanish people one voice. A vote today decides the Spain of tomorrow," he said.
Pablo Casado, the leader of the right wing People's Party (PP) which is expected to see improved results on Sunday, also cast his vote in Madrid with a similar message.
"I realize that these are the fourth elections in four years and people have voted twice this year, but it is very important that there is a massive participation, since that is the tool we have," said Casado.
Pablo Iglesias, leader of the left wing Unidos Podemos party, said he hoped there was an "ample turnout," and again offered a post-election pact with the PSOE to "turn Spain into an example of social justice."
The leader of the center-right Ciudadanos party, Albert Rivera, later voted in the same polling station as Sanchez.
It is thought the far right wing party 'Vox' will see its number of deputies increase significantly from the 24 that the party won on April 28.
Some 37 million voters are called to cast their votes on Sunday in 22,867 polling stations across Spain with 59,538 tables and 211,000 ballot boxes. A total of 92,000 police and Civil Guards are responsible for security during the election.
The polls close at 8:00pm local time and the results should be known before midnight.
