ABUJA, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Six local hunters were killed when gunmen attacked a village in Nigeria's northeastern state of Adamawa, local authorities said on Monday.

The state police while confirming the incident to Xinhua said yet-to-be-identified gunmen on camels carried out the attack in Aljannaru village of Song, a local government area of Adamawa, early Sunday.

Suleiman Nguroje, a spokesman for the police in the state, said security operatives had been deployed to track down the fleeing gunmen.

"We're appealing that people should be vigilant and report any suspicious movement," Nguroje said.

Locals said the heavily armed attackers with herds of cow rode on camels into the village, with their cows destroying people's farms.

They then climbed a hill overlooking the village and opened fire indiscriminately before carrying out house-to-house attacks, one witness said.

Modibbo Tola, a leader of the association in Adamawa, said an investigation was underway to apprehend the killers.
