DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) --The Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Tanzania's leading medical facility located in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, is set to introduce in vitro fertilization (IVF), a type of assisted reproductive technology used for infertility treatment.

Laurence Museru, the MNH Executive Director, said the medical facility will introduce IVF starting January next year to help couples who have been trying to get a baby but have failed.

"The introduction of IVF is good news for couples who for a long time have been unable to conceive due to infertility," Museru told a news conference in Dar es Salaam when he explained achievements made by the hospital in the past four years of President John Magufuli's administration.

IVF is a medical procedure used to help a woman get pregnant when eggs are taken from the ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a laboratory, where they develop into embryos.

Museru said the management of the hospital will announce the IVF treatment costs in the near future.

"To begin with, we sent our staff to India to acquire knowledge on how the IVF treatment is conducted," said Museru.

He added that the MNH has already begun the process of procuring essential medical supplies needed for IVF treatment.
