TRIPOLI, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The east-based Libyan army on Tuesday announced destroying armored vehicles from Turkey belonging to the UN-backed government forces in the city of Misrata, some 200 km east of the capital Tripoli.

"Based on accurate intelligence, the Armed Forces monitored transport of 19 armored vehicles by the Turkish civilian ship Kusavak Rost from Turkey to Misrata port yesterday," a spokesman for the Tripoli-based army, Ahmad al-Mismari, said in a statement earlier Tuesday.

Fighter jets of the eastern army launched airstrikes that destroyed the armored vehicles, the statement said.

The Medical Center of Misrata said that 13 civilians, including a woman, were injured in the attacks.

The eastern army, led by General Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign in and around Tripoli for more than seven months trying to control the city and overthrow the UN-backed government.

Thousands were killed and injured in the armed conflict, while hundreds of thousands others were displaced.
