LONDON, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Mayor Sadiq Khan urged Londoners Wednesday to plant 100,000 trees in the British capital during the winter months.
Ahead of National Tree Week which runs from Nov. 23, the London mayor called on people in the city to take part in 30 tree planting events across the capital.
"This will contribute towards increasing London's tree canopy by 10 percent by 2050 and maintain London's status as the world's first National Park City," said a City Hall spokesperson.
Around 40,000 trees have been funded by City Hall through Community Tree Planting Grants for planting this winter. A further 60,000 will be planted by Londoners throughout National Tree Week.
The spokesperson added: "175,000 trees have been already been planted through City Hall programs since May 2016. The new trees being planted this winter bring the total to 275,000."
Events across London will see 15,000 families planting in their gardens after winning 30,000 free trees in a ballot, while community groups and schools across London will be planting 25,000 trees.
Londoners will also be able to pick up trees for planting from 10 locations across the capital during National Tree Week.
City Hall is supporting the Orchard Project, a national charity dedicated to the creation or restoration of community orchards, providing free fruit trees to community groups wanting to start their own orchards.
