RABAT, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Morocco foiled an attempt to smuggle 1.35 tons of cannabis near the eastern town of Outate Elhaj, and arrested three people.
According to a statement by the Moroccan police on Friday, the banned substance was concealed inside two cars.
During this operation on Thursday, materials, money and knives were seized.
The suspects were remanded in police custody for investigation in order to identify all the members of this criminal network and establish its possible international ramifications, the statement added.
Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation in the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
The Moroccan security authorities seized more than 112 tons of cannabis and its derivatives by Sept. 15 this year, show official statistics.
