DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- An oil tanker veered off Sam Nujoma road on Saturday morning killing three people on the spot, a few meters from the Mlimani City Shopping Mall visited by tens of hundreds of residents in Tanzania's commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

Mussa Taibu, Kinondoni regional police commander, said one person was injured and was rushed to Muhimbili National Hospital.

"The accident was caused by negligence of the driver who ran away after the accident," Taibu told Xinhua when reached on phone.

He said the accident occurred at around 11.20 am, adding that the tanker which was cordoned off by police was being driven from Ubungo to Kijitonyama when it veered off the road.

Taibu said one of the three killed persons had been identified as a 20-year-old electrician from Kimara Temboni on the outskirts of the business capital.

Taibu said police had impounded the tanker as they hunted for the driver.

In August this year, more than 100 people were killed after a fuel tanker exploded in Tanzania's eastern region of Morogoro.

Most of the dead were reportedly trying to collect leaking petrol from the overturned fuel tanker before it exploded.

The tanker reportedly overturned after its driver tried to avoid knocking down a motorcycle rider.
