NEW DELHI, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Heinous crimes like murders and rapes have risen in Delhi over the past one year, reveals the latest data released by the Delhi Police, confirmed official sources on Monday.

According to the data, a total of 459 murders were reported in the Indian capital till November 15 this year as compared to 439 murders during the corresponding period of the last year, showing a rise of nearly five percent.

Similarly, a total of 1,947 rape cases were reported in the city till November 15 as compared to last year's 1,921 cases during the same period last year.

The increase in the incidence of heinous crimes was attributed to gang war killings, particularly during the last six months. A majority of murders were a result of sudden provocation or enemy enmity, and crime-related killings formed a small portion.

The crime data also showed that the number of vehicle thefts had also risen from January till November 15, compared to the same period last year. A total of 40,736 vehicles were stolen this year till November 15, compared to 40,073 such thefts last year.

The recovery rate of the stolen vehicles is said to be less than five percent.
