KIGALI, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Kenya-based airline Jambojet on Monday became the first low-cost airline operating the route between Rwandan capital Kigali and Kenyan capital Nairobi after carrying out maiden flights along the route.

Flight JM 8546 landed at Kigali International Airport at around 16:15 Rwandan time (1415 GMT) amid a traditional dance and a water salute. The airline will fly once daily to Kigali.

The launch of the flights is part of the airline's regional expansion strategy, and the company plans to make flights to Mogadishu in Somalia after the launch of the Kigali route, said Jambojet chief executive Allan Kilavuka at the inaugural ceremony of the flights in Kigali.

The airline believes the entry into Rwanda will boost trade flows between the two countries, he said.

According to the airline, some 65,000 Kenyans visit Rwanda every year.

Since its inception in 2014, the airline has flown 3 million passengers. Currently, it flies to five local destinations in Kenya and Uganda's Entebbe, and also to Burundi's Bujumbura on behalf of Kenya Airways.
