COTONOU, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Two ivory traffickers were sentenced each to 36 months imprisonment and fined 840 U.S. dollars for marketing four elephant tusks in Djougou, about 470 km north to the economic capital Cotonou, local media Fraternité reported on Tuesday.
The court of First instance, second class, of Djougou carried out the penalty on November 20, the source said.
According to the media, the two traffickers had been caught in the act of marketing the four elephant tusk in their possession on October 10, this year.
In Benin, the Article 154 of the wildlife regime Act imposes a fine of between 300,000 and 800,000 CFA francs (about 504.36 and 1,345 US dollars) or a period of imprisonment from 6 months up to 5 years on whoever unlawfully imports, exports, re-export or markets wild animals or their trophies and remains.
