JUBA, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Speaker of South Sudan's Parliament Anthony Lino Makana resigned on Sunday evening, ending months of rivalry in the country's legislature.

Makana, a key figure in the ruling party, Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), tendered his resignation to President Salva Kiir during a party meeting.

"As you (lawmakers) requested me to do so (resign) through the emissaries that you sent to me, therefore with the sense of this letter, I hereby humbly and respectively tender my resignation as Speaker," Makana told state-owned radio South Sudan broadcasting Corporation after the SPLM caucus meeting chaired by Kiir in Juba.

Makana who became speaker of the National Transitional Assembly in 2016 recently lost the backing of his SPLM lawmakers, who in turn called for his resignation, accusing him of mismanaging parliament. He denied the allegations.

President Kiir advised the national assembly to unite and to end power wrangles.
