MOSCOW, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) keeps raising tensions in all spheres, including on land, at sea, in the air, in cyberspace and outer space, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

"NATO, as we understand, yielded to the U.S. demand to increase military spending," the ministry's spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a weekly briefing, commenting on the recent NATO summit in London.

She said that NATO's military spending made up more than half of the world's total and exceeded Russia's by more than 20 times, while the alliance still considers Russia as the main threat.

On the eve of the London summit last week, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that since 2016, European members of the bloc and Canada have added 130 billion U.S. dollars to the defense budget and this number will increase to 400 billion by 2024.

The summit has approved a declaration recognizing outer space as an "operational domain" of NATO.
