TRIPOLI, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- The forces of Libya's UN-backed government on Thursday announced the killing of 15 soldiers of the rival eastern-based army in southern Tripoli.

"Heavy artillery of our forces accurately attacked the militias of Haftar near Yarmuk area after they were spotted by the monitoring and reconnaissance teams," the information office of the UN-backed government's forces said in a statement.

The eastern-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April in and around Tripoli, trying to take control of the city and topple the UN-backed government.

"Our forces destroyed three armored vehicles of the militias with six members onboard, and also killed nine others in clashes," the statement said.

Libya has been seeing escalating violence and political division since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
