ALGIERS, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Newly-elected President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Friday called on Algerians to build a new Algeria together.

Tebboune, 74, was elected the 8th President of the North African country since gaining independence from France in 1962, as he won a majority vote of 58.15 percent in the Presidential election on Thursday.

On his Twitter account, Tebboune thanked the Algerians for their trust in him and called on the people to build a "new Algeria together."

Statistics shows that Abdelkader Bengrina came the second by winning 17.38 percent of votes, followed by Ali Benflis with 10.55 percent, and Azzeddine Mihoubi with 7.26 percent, while Abdelaziz Belaid came fifth with 6.66 percent.

Tebboune was Minister-Delegate for Local Government from 1991 to 1992.

Under President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, he served as Minister of Communication and Culture from 1999 to 2000, and as Minister-Delegate for Local Government from 2000 to 2001. He was Minister of Housing from 2001 to 2002.

Ten years later, he returned to head the Housing Ministry in the government of Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal. He was appointed as Prime Minister in May 2017, but was dismissed and replaced by Ahmed Ouyahia three months later.
